Clean Deodorant – Are You Ready to Make the Switch?

Clean Deodorant Taos AER

If you are reading this article, I know that you are ready to find that perfect clean deodorant.

Most likely, you are looking for a deodorant that not only performs, but is also a cleaner, sustainable and cruelty-free option without the normal list of disruptive chemicals.

If you have already started the search, then you know that all clean deodorants are not created equal. You have probably experienced some of the detoxing period and maybe even found yourself with uncomfortable rashes under your arms (been there, done that). It’s true – without the proper tools, the transition can be a real process.

Good news, I learned the hard way so that you don’t have to experience half of those things. Below, you will find out how to pick the right time to make the change, what tools you need to have in your arsenal and which deodorant brand allowed me to commit to clean deodorant for good.

Here’s how to start your transition to clean deodorant!

Set a date to transition.

No, I’m not kidding. Fall, early winter and spring are the best times to make the transition. I think it is obvious why summer might not be the best idea but what you might not think about is how much you perspire during the winter. All of that manufactured indoor heat combined with the cold outdoors and your favorite fashionable sweater (that you have been dying to pull out of the closet all year… I know, I feel you) is a recipe for disaster.

Go shopping.

It’s time to prep! There are a few things that you will need to handle the detox period with success.

A great exfoliating scrub for under your arms. Here is my favorite! (LINK)

The ultimate charcoal mask and charcoal soap. (USE THIS CHARCOAL MASK – it smells like peppermint) and I love this (USE THIS CHARCOAL SOAP)

And finally, the perfect clean deodorant… which I will introduce you to in a second. (If you can’t wait, here is the link). The discount code can be found at the end of this post!

Here is a quick list of my top recommendations for a smooth detox.

Put your plan in place!

  • Plan to have a good long bath (or long shower) to start the sweating/detox process. Make sure to exfoliate under your arms to get rid of that initial layer of dead skin and gunk. (The bacteria build-up under your arms is what causes a lot of the smell.) If you can do this once a week – go for it!
  • Then, you will want to use the charcoal mask under your arms (and on your face too if you want), once or twice a week. I like this because it’s a little bit less abrasive than the exfoliating scrub which allows you to do it more frequently, and it still helps remove build-up. Both the charcoal mask and the charcoal soap will help pull out impurities and open up the pores under your arm.
  • Use the charcoal bar whenever you shower. Think of it like a touch-up between detox sessions.

Ready, Set, Go!

Now, begin the process! Wait, it’s that easy? Yup! And, it’s going to get even easier because I am taking out the guess work and introducing you to the clean deodorant that I have been swearing by for years.

Without further adieu, let me introduce you to Taos AER.

Taos AER Lavender Myrrh Clean Deodorant
Taos AER Full Sized + Mini Deodorant in Lavender Myrrh

Formulated without the bad stuff (sans parabens, phthalates, sulfates, silicones, or known toxic ingredients), this clean deodorant delivers on all levels. It is cruelty free, 100% naturally derived and sustainable.

There are three scents, Lavender Myrrh, Ginger Grapefruit, Palo Santo Blood Orange, and I highly recommend trying them all. I was hooked on Palo Santo Blood Orange from the beginning, but recently branched out and tried all three scents. Each is wonderful in its own way – if I had to pick my top two scents it would be Palo Santo Blood Orange and Lavender Myrrh.

Here’s what I love about Taos AER, in addition to everything listed above.

The formula is so gentle on your skin. It feels like skincare for your underarms.

The ingredients come together so smoothly on the delicate underarm area while still being incredibly effective. The unique waterless formula incorporates organic tapioca, non-GMO cornstarch, organic beeswax, pure essential oils and a small amount of natural baking soda to create a silky texture. You can feel that an amazing amount of care went into crafting it.

The formula is very concentrated, a little bit goes a long way.  You can expect that the full size deodorant will last up to two months (depending on your usage). Not only is it concentrated, but it is also extremely effective. As someone who regularly enjoys hot yoga and Pilates, this is a BIG deal for me. I need something that packs a lot of punch!

TIP: I just gently squeeze the top of the container to see what comes out and use that as my daily application.

Personal note –  I know that baking soda can be a concern to some. I have pretty sensitive skin. While each person is different, every product that I used in the past with baking soda would leave my arms in awful rashes. Not, Taos AER – the brand uses such a minimal amount of baking soda that I was able to transition reaction free. WIN!

I have a girl crush on company founders Krysia Boinis + Kristine Keheley

Before there was TAOS AER, this dynamic duo started/co-founded one of my all-time favorite clean makeup brands, Vapour Beauty. Don’t let me get started on all of the reasons that I admire them and both of the amazing teams at Vapour and TAOS AER.

For more on Krysia, go to this interview.

Cool Fact: Kristine is the Chief Formulator for the brand – such a cool role right?? Not only did she create the amazing formula for the deodorant, she also dreamed up the custom blend of essential oils that make up each scent.

The scents. The scents are THAT GOOD.

Initially, I chose Palo Santo Blood Orange as my new signature smell. It’s fresh, subtle and almost relaxing. I swore that I would never try a different scent. But… then I did. The Lavender Myrrh scent is calming, grounding and borderline therapeutic. Putting it on each morning feels like a special ritual. If you are looking for something bright, refreshing and almost spicy then the Ginger Grapefruit is probably going to be calling your name.

So which scent are you choosing?

Making the switch to clean deodorant does not have to be difficult. In fact, it can be a fun self-care practice that you carry with you.
